Are you tired of the number on your scale dictating how you feel about yourself? Does your weight stop you from doing things you previously loved, or make you feel less confident?

Losing weight is a personal decision and struggle, but one that can have an amazingly positive impact on your health, your energy, and your confidence level. Find a reason to change your lifestyle that’s about more than how you look in the mirror – being there – and keeping up with – your kids or grandchildren, running your first 5K, even having the energy to further your career or a personal hobby.
Write your “why” where you can see it so that you’re constantly reminded that losing weight isn’t about giving things up – it’s about making gains in the quality of your life.
Check your numbers
Carrying extra weight increases the risk for health conditions* such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke, sleep apnea, respiratory problems, and osteoarthritis. It also impacts your self-esteem and confidence and can dampen your desire to participate in activities you enjoy. Don’t wait for your weight to lead to other health problems. There are three numbers you can assess to determine if you need to lose weight: your BMI, your waist measurement, and the risk factors that you can determine from your family health history.
BMI Calculator
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a very common way to assess whether your current weight is probl

ematic and should be reduced. People with a large percentage of muscle mass may get a skewed result and this method could also underestimate body fat in adults over the age of 65. You should also assess your waist circumference and family health history to get a clearer picture of whether your weight is negatively impacting your health.
View the chart to calculate your BMI
If your BMI falls in the Overweight or Obese category, that’s a good sign you need to start thinking seriously about conquering your weight.
Measure your Middle
Storing excess fat in your waist, as opposed to your hips or thighs, poses a greater risk to your health, as it can raise blood cholesterol levels and lower the body’s sensitivity to insulin.Measure your waist circumference with a tape measure. Over 35 inches for women or over 40 inches for men is a sign to take control.
Health History
Looking at your family health history can provide a clue as to whether or not you should be concerned about your weight. Does your family health history include weight-related conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, osteoarthritis, or sleep apnea? If you have two or more of these health concerns or know family members that have struggled with these issues, definitely consider tackling your weight.

Employees say that feeling valued and being recognized and appreciated is the most important factor for happiness at work. The perfect opportunity to show how much you appreciate your employees is with a service award.
A service award recognizes employees for their length of service to your organization. It also turns your staff into ambassadors for your company, demonstrating to the community that you deserve employee longevity and loyalty.
Create your own successful service award program with these key factors:
- Employees like to have a choice of what gift they receive. Commemorate a service anniversary by giving your employee a selection of gifts to choose from like a Ribbon Gift Collection. Offer a collection of a higher value the longer the employee’s years of service.
- Pair a RibbonGift Card with a certificate, plaque, or handwritten letter of recognition for a truly memorable award.
- Rewards and recognition given in front of co-workers and peers enhances the value. Anywhere from a department meeting to an employee banquet are possible locations, as long as you are consistent so employees know what to expect.
- The employee’s direct supervisor should play a key role in recognizing their service, whether it’s presenting the actual award at an event or a handwritten note thanking the employee for their service. This makes the award much more personal than if it were handed out by an HR person or administrative assistant, or worse, sent via inter-office mail.
- Recognition should go beyond just name and years of service to highlight the achievements of the employee during their tenure with your organization.

You won’t be able to physically see a difference, but working out your bones really does work wonders for your health!
The best type of exercise for your bones is the weight-bearing kind, which forces the body to work against gravity. Examples of weight-bearing exercises include weight training, walking, hiking, jogging, climbing stairs, tennis, and dancing. Examples of exercises that are not weight-bearing include swimming and bicycling. Although these activities help build and maintain strong muscles and have excellent cardiovascular benefits, they are not the best way to exercise the bones.
If you are in your 20s, this is prime time to engage in bone-building exercises. Young women and men who exercise regularly generally achieve greater peak bone mass (maximum bone density and strength) than those who do not. For most people, bone mass peaks during the second decade of life. By establishing healthy exercise habits as an important part of a daily routine in these early years, the results can provide a strong base for maintaining muscle strength, coordination, and balance, which in turn helps to prevent falls and related fractures in the later decades.
Weight-bearing exercise isn’t just for twenty-somethings, however. Even if your 20s are a distant memory, weight-bearing exercises can still help to increase bone density. Doing these types of exercises also improves muscle strength and helps you have better balance – important factors in reducing the risk of injuries from falls later in life.
And, you certainly don’t have to spend hours in the gym or worry about looking “ripped.” A simple 20- to 30-minute routine two or three times per week should suffice in helping you build your bones.
Here’s a great routine to get started. These moves work your entire body and don’t take much time. Try to work this into your current exercise regimen a few times a week and enjoy knowing that you’ll be building a stronger you from the inside out. It only takes about 20 minutes, so you can easily fit it into a lunch break!
- Warm up by walking or jogging for 10 minutes.
- Do two to three sets of the following exercises, depending on the amount of time you have.
- Squats.Stand with your feet straight ahead or bent slightly outward. Slowly bend your knees and lower your hips toward the floor, making sure not to extend your knees past your toes or go lower than 90 degrees. Do 10 to 15 reps.
- Push-ups.This move is a classic for a reason – it works your whole body. Aim for 10 to 15 reps and keep your body in a straight line as you go lower. If your form is lacking, you can modify this move by keeping your knees on the ground and crossing your ankles.
- Plank. On a mat, get into the “up” position of a push-up or raise your body up onto your elbows. Contract your abs and keep your body in a straight line from your head to your toes. Hold for as long as you can – this counts as one set.
- Finish by gently stretching the muscles you’ve worked.
If you prefer to work out to a DVD, the 4-3-2-1 Body Training DVD, presented by the NUTRILITE® brand, will give you a complete workout in just 10 minutes, including weight-bearing exercises that can help you build stronger bones.

You’re never too young or too old to focus on the health of your bones. Here are the best ways to show your bones some TLC at every stage of life.
- 20s: In your 20s, bone mass peaks, but that doesn’t mean you can ignore your bones at this important stage in life. Start a healthy weight-bearing exercise routine (see this month’s Fitness article for ideas) and focus on proper nutrition. What not to do? You’ll negatively impact your bone development by consuming a lot of soda, excessively dieting, or exercising in an extreme fashion. Make sure all your nutritional needs are covered at this stage of life with a multivitamin such as NUTRILITE® Daily Multivitamin or a convenient daily supplement pack such as NUTRILITE Women’s or Men’sPack.

- 30s: For men and women, bone loss normally begins in the mid-30s. For women, pregnancy and breastfeeding place extra demands on a woman’s body and may affect the mother’s bones. A woman’s demand for calcium is greater during pregnancy and breastfeeding because both mother and child need it. Eating a diet rich in low-fat dairy products can provide a great deal of calcium. You can also try supplementing with NUTRILITE Ultimate Bone Health Solution. It contains not only the calcium your body needs at this stage, but also includes a patent-pending supplement to help you keep calcium where it belongs – in your bones. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, make sure you talk to your doctor about what’s best for you regarding your calcium needs.
- 40s: Ask your doctor for a bone density test in your 40s. This test is painless and can help you recognize a bone health problem if one exists. In your 40s, you should continue good bone health habits such as strength-training workouts and proper nutrition. In addition to supplementing with calcium, you may want to consider adding vitamin D to your routine. This nutrient helps the body absorb calcium and supports breast, colon, and immune system health. Try NUTRILITE Vitamin D3 2000 IU plus K2. This is also a great time to upgrade your multivitamin to one with plant nutrients, such as NUTRILITE DOUBLE X® Vitamin/Mineral/Phytonutrient. This will ensure you’re getting everything your body needs, even when time won’t allow for a perfect diet.
- 50s and beyond: In the five to 10 years after menopause, bone loss is rapid. It’s estimated that postmenopausal women lose up to 3 percent of their bone mass every year. Eating right and getting plenty of exercise remains crucial to protect the bones. You should also consider upping your calcium intake. It’s recommended that women over 50 get at least 1,500 mg of calcium a day, so consider taking a supplement three times daily, rather than two, for maximum absorption. It’s also advisable to continue to ask your doctor for bone density tests on a regular basis. You can compare the results with the test you took in your 40s – hopefully all that strength-training, healthy eating, and supplementation will have paid off! If you haven’t been doing those things, start today. It really never is too late. After all, these years could see you chasing grandchildren around and you’ll need all the strength you can get to keep up!
Remember, bone health needs are different through the ages, and it is necessary to adapt your diet and routine to promote and maintain bone growth in every decade. Rejoice in your newfound knowledge to optimize your bone health, and celebrate future birthdays knowing you’re building the strongest foundation possible.

New year, new you
Lip service
Adding lip colour is the one-second makeover, making you instantly look more pulled-together and glamorous. For daytime, choose a shade that complements your natural coloring. And make sure you always have a back-up tube – once you discover the power of your perfect shade, you’ll never want to go without.
Get gilded without the guilt.
Longing for a healthy golden glow? Try 3D Face Powder for year-round color. Using light strokes, apply everywhere the sun would naturally kiss: the top of the forehead, along the nose, and at the tops of cheekbones. A touch on the chin, chest, and neck also adds a nice glow.
Play with colour.
Resolve to get out of your beauty rut! You’ll be surprised at how switching out your eye colour or trying a statement-making lip shade will freshen up your look. Experiment with a few shades you normally wouldn’t consider with the ARTISTRY Virtual Makeover Tool, and remember, all ARTISTRY® products are backed by a 180-day Money Back Guarantee.
Replace and renew
Maybe it’s the perfect shade of lipstick, or you just don’t want to waste the last little bit of eyeliner. But, there comes a point when you have to part with your fave products because they’re past their prime. Anything over a year old should be replaced, but mascara typically has a shelf life of only three to four months. Immediately toss anything that smells “off” or if the colour or texture has begun to change.

As a parent, keeping your kids healthy is obviously a top priority. Just as adults tend to let their healthy routines go when life gets hectic, children also tend to let things slide without a little prompting from mom and dad.
Set a good example by sticking to these five tried-and-true healthy habits yourself, while making sure your kids meet these healthy goals every day.
- Brush and floss.Children age 6 and younger will need help and supervision when brushing and flossing their teeth. Make it a nightly ritual you complete together when they’re young and remind them to keep it up as they get older. Starting the habit early help can ensure good dental hygiene habits for a lifetime.
- Wash your hands.Make sure you practice this important hygiene step before preparing or eating foods; after using the bathroom, taking out the trash, or playing with pets; and before and after caring for a sick child. Remind your kids that even though their hands might not look dirty, frequent hand-washing is the best way to prevent spreading germs.
- Sleep. You know how you feel when you haven’t had enough sleep. Making sure your little ones get their rest is critically important to their brain development and physical and mental performance the next day. Adequate sleep is also important to their immune health. Experts agree that most kids ages 5 to 12 need 10 to 11 hours of sleep every night. Start a bedtime routine and make it a top priority so everyone in your house wakes up refreshed and ready to take on the day.

- Exercise.Luckily, this one is easy to check off your list together! A simple walk after dinner or a game of tag in the backyard fulfills your child’s need to get physical exercise every day. You’ll reap the rewards as well.
- Eat your fruits and veggies.Adults need nine to 13 servings daily, while kids should eat three to five servings, or 35% to 40% of their daily calories, from fruits and vegetables, with a higher emphasis placed on veggies. The health benefits from reaching this target are vast: improved immunity and increased fiber, vitamin, and mineral intake. Plus, filling up on healthy fruits and vegetables instead of less nutritionally sound foods is a natural way to keep weight in check. Round out your family’s healthy eating habits with the following supplements to cover vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and omega-3 fatty acids:

Does winter turn your family into couch potatoes? If the only activity your brood normally ventures out for this time of year is a trip to the mall, seek out some alternative winter activities to keep your kids – and the grown-ups – active.
- There’s no better time of year than now to start thinking those warm summer thoughts with a visit to your local pool. This is one activityyou’ll have no trouble persuading your kids to take part in! Check your local community college, universities, high schools, or community centers for hours and rates.
- If all they want to do is play video games, at least make sure they’re burning some calories in the process. Invest in games with controllers that allow you to virtually compete in a variety of sports, such as golf and tennis. Host family game days – the winner gets out of doing dishes or another dreaded chore.
- If you do find yourself at the mall, take the smaller kids to the indoor play zone, where they can burn off some steam – and calories – during shopping breaks!
- Build memories while you build a seasonal friend. Remember what it felt like to construct a giant snowman? If you’re lucky enough to live in a region with enough snowfall to make it happen, embrace your good fortune and bundle up the family for some outdoor fun. Older kids might be tempted outside by a friendly snowball fight – no ice, please – and everyone loves a good round of sledding. With the calories you’ll expend trekking through the white stuff, you’ll deserve the obligatory hot cocoa once you’re inside.
Enjoy the sports and activities of the season.
